4.2 DO NOTHING

Interesting…

Do nothing. The trolley moves onward to run over and maim 5 innocent people. The single person on the other tracks is unharmed. You chose to “shift” the responsibility of the death to the conditions that led to the uncontrollable trolley.

Neither answer is wrong but doing nothing is usually an outlier. Most people choose to interact in some form. Given that you have chosen do nothing I would like to present to you another variation of the problem. This scenario involves you and self-driving cars. What decision will you make?

Scenario 2:

You are the owner of a self-driving car. You paid good money for the leisure and safety of a self-driving car. Unfortunately, the AI vehicle has been put into an impossible situation. You are on a one-way collision path with a group of bystanders and there is no way around them. The only thing the car can do is drive off the side of the road and kill the driver thus saving the 5 innocent pedestrians.

What should theĀ AI do?
